Many young people today waste their time partying and spending time with friends and family during the New Years Eve and they do also take many resolution which may hold good just for a week or so. Look what happened as Chennai entered into New Year.
On December 31, just minutes before the New Year was ushered in, the stage in Savera Hotel, built above the swimming pool, collapsed under the weight of the revelers. One person was killed instantly.
Twenty-four-year-old Sumit Agnihotri, who hailed from Lucknow, was brought dead to a government hospital.
Four others were injured, including Anand, a third-year engineering student, and Ramya, also a third-year engineering student. They were admitted to Apollo hospital in Chennai in a serious condition. On Monday, they succumbed to their injuries.
Police took into custody, B V S Reddy, president of the Savera Group of Hotels, soon after Anand died.
Reddy was produced before a Magistrate Court here, which granted him bail. Later in the evening, Ramya too succumbed to injuries.
Police had arrested three persons earlier, including the hotel general manager Antony Michael, Narendra Singh, the contractor who had erected the stage, and Singh’s manager Ravi. The hotel had collected Rs 3,000 per head for taking part in the New Year eve bash.
Two youngsters battling for life in the wake of the dance floor collapse at Savera Hotel on New Year’s eve died on Monday, taking the toll to three.
Cousins Anand (22) and Ramya (22) died after a week-long battle for life at the Apollo Hospitals. The two students of Venkateshawara Engineering College were among the dozens of party-goers who had fallen into the swimming pool when the dance floor, erected without permission, above the pool collapsed shortly before midnight on December 31.
Anand’s father Sridhar, a bank employee, and Ramya’s father Natraj, a businessman, are brothers. While Anand’s house is in Vadapalani, Ramya belongs to Mylapore.
They were admitted to the hospital and from then hospital authorities had been saying both were in a critical condition. A few days later, Anand was put on dialysis and artificial respirator. Ramya’s condition was said to be stable and she was said to be breathing without the help of any equipment.
On Monday afternoon, the hospital authorities declared the death of Anand after doctors confirmed him brain dead. Moments later, Ramya was also declared dead. Their parents fainted upon hearing the news.
Meanwhile, their friends and their father’s colleagues gathered at the hospital. Many of them, overcome with grief and shock, were seen crying.
Both the bodies were taken to the Royapettah Hospital for post mortem.
